[ a peek inside my sketchbook ]

This past month I seem to be surrounded with unfamiliarity: a new home, new city, new (and  few nearby)  friends. It's been exhilarating, but equally exhausting. This morning I spent some time developing visual ideas that had been been knocking around in my head, and it was comforting to enjoy such a familiar activity that I had been neglecting to do for weeks.

While I was at it, I snapped a few photos of other sketches in this utterly familiar book. Funny that I never realized this before but -- I can hardly call this a "sketch" book if sketching is defined as roughly drawing what I observe.  It's much more a collection of images I see in my head, and now that I look at a bunch of them together, I realize they are more 'cartoons' than 'sketches', but why get technical?

Here you go:

Time to be different.

Here's a fun booth promotion I made for Smile Reminder. This was displayed via LCD billboard at the American Academy of Cosmetic Densitry Conference  in Los Angeles.

The GOAL: Attract customers to the Smile Reminder service with a creative and whimsical digital billboard.

The RESULT: Thanks in part to this billboard, Smile Reminder had more sales at this year's conference than at any previous AACD conference. Woohoo!

Oldie, But a Goodie.

Cleaning up my hard drive this morning, I came across one of the very first pieces of digital art I ever designed, from my Freshman year of college. Despite lacking detail and development, I'd say it's aged all right.

When it rains

Being the second driest state in the Union (after Nevada), one thing Utah doesn't get a lot of is rain.

So, when the occasional thunderstorm does roll through, it's an event people discuss for days. The past three days in Lehi, Utah (where my office is located) have been especially interesting since we've had thunderstorms every afternoon right at 4 pm, lasting for about half an hour.

4 pm is also right about the time I run out of focus for work-related tasks and start doodling.  Here are the illustrations I made during the past three days' storms.

Giggity Giggity Giggity

Not sure if I'm more stoked that my husband's band is having its debut on Friday, or that I made this rad poster to help promote it. Or that I'm performing in an improv comedy show on Saturday.

Seriously -- Weekend, if you're not here in five minutes, you're fired.
